SHAVING THE SURFACE:
QUEERING THE BARBER'S CHAIR
Shaving the Surface: Queering the Barber's Chair is a mobile arts intervention by Korey Gabriella, produced by Punch Records. The piece takes place inside a working barber shop and explores self-surveillance, performed identity, and the vulnerability of sitting in the chair.
The participant sits in the barber's chair and sees a normal reflection. After 20 to 40 seconds, the mirror transitions - revealing pre-recorded footage of another person in the same position, accompanied by a quiet audio layer of calm instructional prompts. The central experience is the realisation that you are watching a version of yourself you cannot control, while being guided on how to behave.
Taking place Summer 2026 at The Finery, Kings Heath.
