The Gallery37 Residency is Birminghams flagship creative development programme investing in the city’s next generation of artists, with an alumni of over 200 artists.

This FREE programme offers Birmingham based artists (16-25 years) a significant opportunity to boost their career in the creative industries, focused on nurturing creative talent from across the cities diverse communities and neighbourhoods.

Focusing on multiple artforms, we experiment and collaborate, responding to the next generation of creatives, makers and producers. We offer personal, professional and creative development support and opportunities and aim to help build and encourage artists to fulfil their ambitions.

ABOUT THE GALLERY37 residency 2021

This years programme is a two week experience; where we will develop up to 100 hand-picked young creatives (16-25) across 9 creative camps with nationally recognised specialist artists & tutors.

You will get the chance to develop your skills in your chosen artform, meet like-minded creatives, and be supported by established & nationally renowned artists. All in a socially distanced environment.

This year, we have chosen 9 camps that span across all areas of the creative industries. Each individual camp listed below has a description when you click on the title.
This years programme will be Artistically Directed by John Berkavitch.

+ Music Production *with Reuben Reynolds *

Participants will discover and develop their production style. They will learn how to get the most out of relevant software and programmes, how to fine tune sounds with mixing and mastering and how to work with live musicians and instruments.

+ Photography with Grain Photography Hub

Participants will learn the technical skill it requires to take an amazing photo. They will learn how to use their equipment to its fullest potential and will have room to experiment and explore their creativity and refine their artistry.

*Participants are required to use their own camera.

+ Vocal Performance with Cherri Voncelle

Participants will master the technical art of vocal performance as well as stage presence and what it takes to work within the industry as a professional.

Singer / songwriter, Cherri V, will be leading 2021's Vocal Performance camp.

Cherri V biography:

Singer / song writer with three critically acclaimed EPs, a UK top 20 single, and millions of views and streams already under her belt, British singer, songwriter and soul songstress Cherri V is a revered musician in her own right, and one of the most consistent pure vocalists to come out of the UK, with the likes of The Telegraph, BBC 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, MOBO Awards and BET, all singing her praises.

In what has been an eventful career so far, Cherri V has shared the stage and worked with some of her musical idols. Cherri has toured internationally with Eric Benet, Jessie J, Billy Ocean, and Incognito in Australia, Asia, Europe & Japan. Also representing U.K R'n'b/Soul as a support act for Brandy, Floetry, Dawn Richard, Musiq SoulChild & Teedra Moses.

Cherri’s most recent self penned release “Double Decker” is described by her as a therapy session hosted by guitarist / producer Jason Bond.

+ Lyric Writing with John Bernard

From spoken word to poetry and songwriting, participants will learn how to take their ideas from concept to a well structured, melodic and rhythmic piece of writing.

+ Dance with Laura Vanhulle

Participants will master the technical art of movement and stage presence. They will learn tips and techniques which will help them maximise their dance ability during rehearsal and performance.

Laura Vanhulle's biography:

Following her formal dance training Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD), Laura went on to do a post-graduate apprenticeship with ACE dance and music and continued with the company as a professional dance artist. Laura has since worked with Shobana Jeyasingh (Counterpoint), Coda DanceTheatre, Keneish Dance Theatre, Motionhouse (The Voyage), Rutherford Dance Company, Sonia Sabri Company, Room 2 Manoeuvre, Michael Marso Riviere, Autin Dance Theatre, Aakash Odedra (as Rehearsal Director), Gary Clark, Rogue Play and South Paw dance Company “Icarus” Toured nationally and Internationally. She also danced in the Jack Savoretti video clip ‘Written in the Scars’, under the direction of Niku Chaudhari. In 2016 Laura went to Hong Kong for a flying low program with Vangelis Legakis and worked with The Van-L Dance Company. She is a nationally recognised dance artist and has a strong teaching reputation - nationally and internationally, working regularly with organisations such as The Place, Trip Space (London), DanceXchange, Elmhurst, Wolverhampton University, Coventry University, Nicholson school of dance as lead teacher or Guest teacher/Choreographer. She also teaches Internationally in places like Portugal-Porto, Greece and Belgium (Touching Base workshop in Collaboration with Judith Clijsters). She has been teaching Mock auditions at BA Hons Performing Arts (Edge Hill University)

+ Film with Daniel Alexander Films

Participants will learn what it takes to create a short film from start to finish. From concept to scripting, filming and editing.

+ Digital Arts with Kibla Ahmed

Participants will learn how to take an idea from concept to a digital piece of art. Including how to use the relevant adobe software to create digital illustration, graphic design, moving imagery and much more.

British comic book artist and digital illustrator, Kibla Ahmed, will be leading 2021's Digital Arts camp.

Kibla Ahmed biography:

"I am a freelance traditional/digital comic artist for plus 10 years, working on various projects such as comic book covers, writing and illustrating my daughter's story book which is my greatest achievement.

I am a big comic book fan and on a journey to get my work out there, my next mission is to work with the big guys to get my artwork on Marvel or DC comics, while on my journey I want to be able to help inspire artists of all kinds."

+ Theatre Performance with Yael Shavit

Participants will learn how to give compelling performances to invoke emotion from their audiences. They will learn tools and techniques to help needed for acting performance and where and when to apply them for a successful career in the creative industry.

Yael Shavit's biography:

Yael is a theatre director, dramaturg, creative workshop facilitator and a visiting practitioner at drama schools/ universities around the UK. She is a recipient of the Jerwood Directors Award. For over twenty years she has collaborated with actors, writers, theatre artists, film makers, and musicians on the development of new work for both stage and screen. Yael specialises in collaborative theatre making often working with artists who are devising new work together or drawing on lived experience in their work. She has worked extensively with leading UK spoken word artists including Polarbear, Molly Naylor, John Berkavitch, Warsan Shire, Zia Ahmed and Sean Mahoney. Recent credits include How to Keep Time by Antosh Wojcik, Until You Hear That Bell by Sean Mahoney, How to Die of a Broken Heart by Femi Keeling and Mouth Open Story Jumps Out by Polarbear. She is currently developing new audio work with theatre artist Sinead Rushe and working on a new piece of music theatre for Dash Arts. Yael teaches collaborative theatre making, playwriting and screenwriting at Rose Bruford, University of Birmingham and Central School of Speech and Drama.

+ Visual Arts with Sylwia Narbutt

Participants will learn how to hone their craft in visual arts. From fashion to paint, illustration and crafting, visual artists will be given space to explore and experiment enabling them to develop and refine their artistry.

 
 

Gallery37 presents 6 new art commissions in Birmingham centred on the theme of “roaming”

In 2021, Gallery37 brought together 100 young creatives to take part in a two week residency. This year, 9 of those artists have been hand chosen and commissioned to create individual artistic events, in North Birmingham and Central Birmingham.

“Everything is too central. We used to have platforms in this area, but they have been stripped away”

Be prepared to be in awe of each commission, as we celebrate Birmingham's Creative Future with eight major pieces of work, across Birmingham from August - October 2022.

MAJOR commissions

 

To launch the Residency programme, Gallery37 has commissioned 7 artists to transform areas of North Birmingham by engaging with local communities & delivering public art projects over 2020 - 2022. Working with a range of local partners, the commissioned artists will display over 100K worth of artworks across the public realm; from high streets, shopping centres, waterways and parks.

Following the success of 2021’s Gallery37, we’re creating a programme of 6 in-person workshops/masterclasses called 'Lowdown' that focus on the business aspects of becoming an artist in the UK Creative Industry with guest speakers, artists and entrepreneurs. Lowdown will be an extra opportunity to upskill Birmingham's Creative Future, to help reach their full potential - ready to be commissioned, ready to be on festival line-ups, ready to host their own events & exhibitions; and so much more.

Back in 2020, in the run up to the Residency, we ran monthly Masterclasses featuring special guests, artists and mentors from around the world will take place on various online platforms from Zoom to Twitch to inspire the next generation of creatives in the West Midlands, whilst the country is still in lockdown.
