Equalize: Putting Black Dance Music on the Curriculum

A movement to celebrate culture, inspire creativity, and give young people the music education they deserve.

Equalize is a national project bringing Black dance music into classrooms and community spaces across the UK. From Jungle to Garage, House to Afrobeats, these sounds have shaped British culture for generations — but they’re often missing from the music curriculum. Equalize changes that by giving young people the chance to learn, create, and connect through the music that tells their story.

Why Equalize Matters

  • Representation: Young people thrive when they see themselves reflected in what they learn.

  • Creativity: Exploring diverse music opens doors to self-expression and confidence.

  • Education: Equalize supports schools in building inclusive, relevant, and engaging music provision.

“I didn’t find any of my identity through what I learned in school at that time … It would be cool if that stuff was taught as opposed to just teaching me about Mozart and Bach.” - Jordan Stephens (Rizzle Kicks)
