After its premiere at Mockingbird Cinema in September, Gallery 37 2018 introduces original dance film from Birmingham film-makers Nuriah Tissera & Thai Uriah with local dancers Crisis & Shin (Key Infinity) with Shauna Latty & Tia Christopher.
Working closely with choreographer’s Steady (Flawless) & Giselle Liu the new work explores this year’s theme COMMON | WEALTH. Taking a heartfelt response to our current crisis in humanity, the dancers weave a battle of division and commonality.
First time dance film makers, Thai says about the process “ Stomp the Yard & You Got Served were my creative references points going into this shoot, but in the rehearsals I instantly felt the sense of pain and struggle…I wanted the audience to feel that in their performance on screen”
Adding to the creative mix were the musical team producer Demarae & composer/performer Shenai who worked in situ throughout the devising & performance process: “the instant connection between sound, beat and Shenai’s incredible vocals offered as makers a fluid and constant interplay between movement & music which has translated perfectly to the screen”.
G37 Dance & Film Camp is delivered by Punch with financial investment from Arts Connect, Dance Hub Birmingham Hub Birmingham, with filming taking place at Medicine & Nicholson School of Dance.
During 3 stages, this year G37 focuses on the exploration of the theme “Common Wealth”. The following Art Camps are developing new work and ideas which will be on display at various venues throughout the city during 2018.
